Padayani
During the month of January–February, on the Makara Bharani star, an 28-day festival is celebrated at the Kottangal temple, located on the border of Kottayam and Pathanamthitta districts. Padayani is performed here every year. The last 8 days are extremely important, featuring traditional programs and various Kolams (masked performances). The Padayani is conducted by two local divisions (karas)—Kottangal and Kulathoor. The final 8 days are divided equally between the two karas, with each getting 4 days. The last 2 days hold equal importance for both karas and are known as Valiya Padayani (Great Padayani). Both sides participate with a strong spirit of competition during these days. Colorful night processions take place on the final two nights.
